by SYLC

Centered around the three mediums of choice for visual artist SYLC (painting, drawing, and sculpture), the solo exhibition “Equilibre” features some thirty works.

Whether painted, drawn, or sculpted, SYLC’s work speaks of presences—physical or disembodied… Her work speaks of LIFE. Life in its human, animal, or plant form. She prompts us to reflect on humanity, on the complexity of human identity, on our strength and fragility, on our beliefs and fears... She also makes us reflect on the inseparable bonds humans forge with nature, without which they would not exist.

Full of strength, the artist’s dreamlike and sensitive work draws on the world of fairy tales, phantasmagoria, and the marvelous to bring chimerical creatures to life in a halo of unsettling illusions and enigmatic mirages.

Over the past ten years, the artist has focused extensively on hybridization: the humanity of the animal and the bestiality of man united in a single being, a subtle blend of instinct and reason, strength and vulnerability, tangible reality and fantasy.

SYLC’s pictorial work, a skillful balance of vibrant colors and delicate transparencies, is primarily figurative, but the fading or subtle emergence of clues, signs, or traces gives rise to otherpossible underlying interpretations. The artist does not seek to reveal everything; she refuses to engage in narrative in order to allow each viewer’s fertile imagination to follow its own path by focusing on details imperceptible to others.

Over the past five years, SYLC has devoted herself to the vital connections that humanity must forge with nature, the lifeblood of our existence. In her latest series, “REFLET(S)” and “DEEP INTO THE WILD,” the artist immerses us in the heart of dense, lush vegetation—at times soothing, at times unsettling.

Yet these strange scenes seem unreal and possess a timeless quality. Are we facing a distant, primitive era? A future era in which nature has reclaimed its rightful place? Or simply a dream—a utopia of a civilization that has once again made peace with Mother Earth? True to her convictions, SYLC gives free rein to our interpretation to decipher this in-between world...
